Yes to LASIK!?
What makes LASIK so attractive for so many millions of people?
Patients in Germany are following the international trend: The interest
in surgical vision correction is rising. Within the past year, approximately
70,000 Germans took the step to have laser eye surgery, in 2002 over
100,000 operations are anticipated already. What are the motivating
reasons to take this step, which is not free of risk?
LASIK does not guarantee perfect vision. LASIK, however, promises freedom
from cumbersome devices, such as glasses or contact lenses. This enables
many patients for the first time ever to pursue hobbies and athletic
activities. However there is more; being able to see without glasses
or contacts offers many advantages and increased safety in day to day
living.
Weekend athletes, and also professionals confirm, that they feel much
safer without glasses and contacts. For instance, they do not need to
be afraid anymore that their contact lenses might slide, or worry about
dust in their eye. Mothers are delighted that their little ones are
not constantly grabbing at their glasses, and that they are able to
respond to their children’s needs at night without bumping into
furniture. Travelers, particularly frequent flyers, are delighted with
the new freedom. Not to have to worry about cleaning fluid, or having
problems with dry air on the plane….
The decision, whether to have surgery must be made by each individual
patient himself. The technician, with a comprehensive explanation, and
evaluation of the individual’s examination assists with weighing
the benefits and risks.
