Good vision means Quality of Life
The human eye conveys more impressions than any other sensory organ.
Our eyes observe numerous optical impulses each second, and unconsciously
pass them on to our brain. We only become aware of the visual impressions
once the brain processes the information. Whoever does not see well
– misses a lot! Words, pictures or detailed movements never reach
our consciousness. Even though good vision is often equated to 100%
visual acuity, visual acuity is not the only parameter. Color- and contrast
awareness is also significant, as well as the visual field (total space
the eye can see without moving).
Visual defects (ametropia) can be adjusted with glasses, contact lenses,
or also with surgery. However, vision corrected by these means can greatly
vary in quality.
Glasses are the easiest way to correct a visual defect. On the other
hand, this has the most disadvantages: glasses limit the field of vision,
either magnify or shrink perception, and can even distort it with a
stronger astigmatism. Not each visual defect can be adjusted with glasses.
They can be an annoying factor in many activities and can even jeopardize
the safety of the wearer of glasses.
Many of these disadvantages can be circumvented with optimally adjusted
contact lenses. Noteworthy: A poll within the industry showed, that
young people in particular prefer contact lenses, since they feel more
dynamic, active, and attractive without glasses. Even though contact
lenses do not fog up, they can slide, and they can get lost. Furthermore,
contact lenses need constant care, and without proper cleaning over
a period of time, can damage the eye. Many patients are incapable of
wearing contact lenses after 10 to 15 years, and even chronic cornea
injuries are possible.
Alternatives are offered with various operations, which correct the
refraction power of the eye with cornea surgery or ocular lens. Lately,
there have been an increasing number of people who wear glasses or contact
lenses, who decide to undergo a procedure called “refractive surgery”.
LASIK is the procedure used most often.
